eaten dry, will rob water from your body and make you ill.

o Heavy
o Needs water – DH foods are 20 – 25% water
Frozen foods
Pros
o Usually taste good
o Generally easy to cook
o Most times doesn’t need water to prepare

o May need a way to cook
o Not portable
o Shorter storage life
Canned foods
Pros
o May taste good
o Generally, just heat and eat
o Can eat directly from the can
o May contain liquid that can be used to cook other food

o Heavy/not easily portable
o Glass jars are breakable
o Canned foods may take on tinny flavor over time
o Shorter storage life

Find out what your family likes and store that
Practice cooking with food storage today
Convert one of your family’s favorite recipes to food storage

You’ll need determine your own family’s favorite, which will be different
from ours. This list is to start you thinking.
Freeze dried raspberries, strawberries, cheese, citrus (from Trader
Joes) and sausage
Dried cherries, pineapple, apples, mushrooms, tomatoes and tomato
powder, bell peppers, onions
Canned coconut milk, Rao pasta sauce, pumpkin puree, solid white
tuna, real maple syrup
Home-canned apple-pear-plum sauce, citrus, beef and chicken, chili
sauce, apple butter
Vacuum sealed chocolate chips (a must-have!), nuts, dried fruits, and
cereals
Anything fresh from a garden or orchard
A variety of spices and herbs
The odd-ball list: shelf-stable whipping cream, unsweetened Kool-
